Another Single Cupcake!

From what I can tell, my post "How To Make 1 Cupcake" has become the most popular post on Sweet Road, so I decided it's time to add a few more single serving cupcake recipes to satisfy the individual cupcake craze! Let's start off with this Creme Fraiche Cupcake!

Avocado and Pea Sprout Maki Roll

One thing about Cuba - there is no sushi there. At least not to my knowledge. Even if there was a sushi restaurant somewhere, I would not have trusted it considering we were told to stay away from anything raw. That said, as someone who feels incomplete without some form of Japanese food as often as I can get it, I was a litte antsy by the time I stepped off the plane!

Learning from Experience

Hey everyone! So as you may have noticed, there has been a pause in my kitchen adventures. Why? Because I have been out of the country and without any technology at all! No computer, no phones, no internet, nothing! Just a few books, a few more notebooks, and a film camera. I won't lie, the lack of connection was amazing... I may be prone to taking technology breaks a lot more in the future, as I found my productivity,  general observation skills, and ability to soak in my surroundings increased tremendously! I transitioned from wintery gray days, hibernating in my kitchen making holiday truffles and roasted chestnuts to sunny and breezy afternoons exploring a crumbling city, layer by layer. So where exactly does one go to have an experience like this? Cuba!

Start The New Year With Knowledge!

Have you ever noticed all the food trends that constantly deem certain foods as "good" or "bad"? How many times do you really dive deep to research the truth or reasoning behind these claims? Okay, maybe a few foodies and health nuts may try, but in general, most people don't have the time to research the newest health do's and don'ts, so it is incredibly difficult to gain a cohesive understanding of how and why ingredients affect us. So what about high-fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, and corn-fed meats? Or what about omega-3's, olive oil, and organic foods? What makes these foods "unhealthy" or "healthy"?

I was recently given the opportunity to read William D. Lassek, M.D. and Steven J.C. Gaulin, Ph.D.'s Why Women Need Fat. As someone who takes the time to learn about healthy food choices, this managed to clear up all my lingering questions about so many foods. Why Women Need Fat is essential for every woman (and man!) in order to understand the reasoning behind so many food myths. For example, major topics in the book include the specific roles that various foods play, how and why diets do not work, and in-depth explanations of which ingredients to stay away from. The information and research in this book present fascinating conclusions to studies about how our bodies react, and can all be easily understood without skimping on the details. Did you know that butter and lard are actually healthier for you than vegetable oils? Or that diets convince your body to gain more weight in the long run? I didn't... until recently.

Aside from the wealth of knowledge provided in explanations, research, and stories, the index contains charts with all the information for easy referral. I decided I must get Why Women Need Fat for every woman I care about. As they say, "knowledge is power", and now I have the power to successfully navigate the American grocery store.

My Recent Obsession

I have a new obsession. It's not really new, but it's status as "obsession" is new: I want to go to France!
I would love to just hop on over right now, but I'm thinking this is an adventure I will save for a few years from now, maybe after I graduate and actually have some money...
In the meantime I spend my time learning French via audio cd and baking baguettes in my kitchen while imagining there is art nouveau architecture along cobblestone streets just outside my window. Am I romanticizing too much?
