It took a cold night and a look back at old recipes to realize that aside from pie, I had fallen out of the cooking world. I do it every summer when it's too hot to cook. I live on fruit, yogurt, and granola (and pie) for a few months, then a cool night will come by and I'll want to cook again.
While looking through old recipes, I found photos of roasted brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. Comfort foods are my favorite. It took awhile to come to terms with my favorite foods being of the comfort variety, but I must admit I love my grandma's Italian-American style raviolis, those huge pillows that burst with ricotta and hiding under a blanket of very plain, simple tomato sauce. I love soups thrown together out of leftover veggies when groceries are getting low. I love going out for a hot bowl of steamy ramen filled with veggies, soft-boiled eggs, and hardy broth. And lastly, burritos rule. All the foods that are fattening and have generally been considered "out of fashion" are slowly being revisited and I'm very excited about it. Tell me you haven't seen an artisan grilled cheese restaurants or food truck, decked out polenta dishes, or my favorite: flatbreads. Can't we all just admit it and call it a pizza? The point is, winter is coming sooner or later, so let's embrace it and get cooking on those dishes whether they that warm our souls!
